so hard to go in any gear
i bought a 1989 mustang lx with the 5.0 conversion. it is so hard to put it into any gear. the clutch is very hard to press and when i do throw it in first it slams in there. this is only when the car is on. when the car is off it goes into gears pretty easy except for reverse. reverse is the only gear that grinds. i got a short shifter by the way. does anyone know what the problem is. some people tell me the tranny is messed up,some say i got a racing clutch thats why the pedal is hard, some say i need a new pressure plate and some say its the shifter. i dont know what it is

the owner told me that too and i did do that. where the line comes out from the firewall i turn it all the way and i think it helped a bit but its still hard. maybe the line is too short??

RE: so hard to go in any gear
Pedal stiffness is determined by the finger springs on the clutch pressure plate. A high clamping clutch will be harder to push down, so that is probably what you have. When the tranny will go in gear easy with the motor off, but hard to get in gear with the motor running, it can only be one of three things. Cable out of adjustment, bad syncros or bad pilot bearing. With the car running and in gear, where does the clutch start to grab... just as the pedal is coming off the floor... half way up... or near all the way up? If you answer just as the pedal is coming off the floor, you have too much slack in the cable and when you push the pedal to the floor, it is not fully disengaging the clutch. This will make it hard to get in gear and eventually wear the syncros out, if they aren't already worn out. If you get or have the cable adjusted correctly and the problem is still happening, you have bad syncros or a bad pilot bearing.
