The only way to know for sure will be to take the heads off and check them. If they are ok it is time to go deeper. But it might be completely something else. As someone stated earlier, is there coolant in oil or vice versa. Does he have any coolant? Does the rad need flush, is the stat working, is the fan working, is the water pump working, leaking? There are alot of reasons for a car to overheat. I would check everything that is easy to get to before i take the heads off.

Water in the coolant is OK. JK i think i know what you meant. A bad head gasket could cause both: Water in coolant, uh, i mean water in oil or oil in water.

Oh yeah. When a car overheats, the first think I think about is a cracked cylinder wall

you need more than just over heating to suspect a cracked wall, its highly unlikely, i dont understand how overheating makes your buddy think its cracked????!! several things can cause a motor to overheat like a blocked radiator, bad thermostat, plugged heater core, bad water pump, headgasket, electric fan or clutch fan failure. if theres no white smoke , foamy crap in oil or coolant then you have other things that might be the cause of overheating, in which case i doubt a cracked wall, unless of course you forgot to mention something , like the motor threw a rod,,lol, just playn man. good luck with it

that rice train of thought.

example: "oh man, i missed a shift. that the only reason you beat me by 25 car lengths.my transmission is missing a drizzle bearning in the transfer case. also i forgot the make my shift *** light up, thats my arming switch for my air injection. your just lucky. now i have to replace my transmission, race ya next week"

my car fell victim of a cracked cylinder wall... it was a very sad day...
well.. a very sad week..
we pulled the intake off 4 times, before we finally decided to pull the heads..
white smoke, coolant in oil.. [&:]#7 cylinder cracked.

i bought the motor for $1500..
289 heads
10.5 to 1 compression
i still had some 87 in the tank.. so i had some pre ignition ping..
i had the stock harmonic balancer, and at high rpm vibration was outrageous..
anyways..
too anxious to hot rod, and get sideways everywhere..
long story short, i banged 3rd at about 5k
and heard a loud bang..
