It has nothing to do with them approaching classic status, they are not and never will be rare. It's just hard to find a stock well cared for Fox, many have been beat on, had multiple owners who have hacked on them, rust if your in a northern climate that salts roads, all sorts of issues. If I were in the market for a nice stock Fox, I would be looking to spend $4000-6000 depending. Good deals are out there, you just need to keep your eyes open.

Kelly Blue Book - Suggested Retail Pricing That is for a LX 5.0 Hatch with most common options using my zip code.

Street values will vary a lot. My 87 LX 5.0 5spd notch with 300K miles according to KBB was only like $1900. When the insurance appraised it when it got hit they valued it at over $4k as is, that was the only reason they didn't total it.

buy a 5.0 fox w/ a ****ty body (rusty/accident) and do a drive train swap to ur 2.3 that will prob be the best way to go and a mint unmolested 5.0 will run you and easy $6k around here. my buddy bought a mint 92 GT Vert 5spd tripple black w/ 68kmiles on it for $6k a few years ago.. it really sux he decided to get drunk and crash it into a post..

Never base the value of your car based on kelly blue book.

so with cost and work, is it even worth doing an engine transplant? cuz from what i have read it seems like it would be a pain.

Depends on your cars body and interior, if they are nice swap the drivetrain.

Price will always vary by location, but I doubt the one you saw for 2k was in good condition. You sure it wasnt just a rolling chassis ready for an engine and trans?
