Default What to pay for an engine?

Okay, we are working on our 1994 GT Mustang 5 speed. Going tobe taking an advanced engine's class next spring for school, and in that class I have already talked to the instructor he said I can build my own if I bring it in. So I'm looking to buy a 5.0 to rebuild and eventually swap into our 94.

I'm going to check out an engine out of a 1987 Mustang GT next week. The guy has it all apart, he was going to rebuild it, but had a couple kids and life happened. He also has the ECU and the transmission.

What should I offer him for the disassembled (but complete) engine? How about the ECU? How about the transmission? It's a T5... I wouldn't mind having a spare if I could get it for a good price.

Any input let me know, if it comes to it I'll just buy the engine as the tranny in our car is fine.

Thanks!

None of those parts should be that expensive. Hell, a lot of times you can get a 302 short block for free or next to free. I paid $350 for an old Explorer Engine. It was a turnkey engine that could start and run. And it had the GT40 cylinder heads as well as a nice GT40-style Explorer intake.

okay so what should I offer him for it?

I'll say what should I offer him for the engine/ecu together... and then how about the transmission?

Okay. I've done a ton of small engine rebuilds, and a few automotive engine rebuilds and have a general idea of what to look for... but what should I look out for? Obviously I'm going to see how he organized the parts and if they are labeled, clean, etc... if not I may pass on it...

how much for the trans? $100? It wouldn't hurt to have a spare T5 layin around for when I take manual transmission class...

Thanks for the input

If the T-5 is in perfect working condition its worth a good $350, If its a A9L comp its worth $125, if its a speed density comp, tell him to keep it.

If its out of an 87 gt it will most likely be a speed density computer
