Default advancing timing with no light

I got an 87 5.0 and was trying to advance the timing with no light. I turned the dist. clock wise about an 1/4 inch and no pinging on test drive.

how much of a turn is neccessary to hit max advance. I was worried about 1/4 inch put it did not ping, i noticed it reving a little smoother though.

Also will it hurt the engine to run it advanced with 91 octane for long periods?

i did mine by hand. very small increments with a test drive after each turn.

when i put a light on it (finaly), it was reading about 14 degree's. now i run it 18 degree's with 90+ octane

Yes as long as its not pinging.. Thats how mines done. I usually can just go by the sound of the motor since ive been doing it so long.

Rob change your sig from [IMG] to to [/img] This way it will look like this

Then everyone can see your sweet car.

I'd definately suggest getting a timing light on it, that way you know exactly where you are at!

I also suggest a timing light, just so you know where you are at. Also be sure you are pulling your spout connector out when you time it.

Maybe.... Every car is different. Make sure that you test drive it to check for pinging. If it doesn't ping then you are okay. If it does, back it off a little bit and try it again. Also, be sure to run quality fuel with a high octane rating with advanced timing.

I'm not sure what its set at now(no pinging) I was really surprised at how much I could actually feel the difference.

I was in 5th gear today and punched and was surprised how quick it accelerated, where before It would slowly pick up. How much HP do you pick up from a timing advance. I know i felt a difference.
