The '98 has airbags and abs and the '88 doesnt have either one.
Personally I wouldnt want air bags or abs.

I bought my daily driver without abs on purpose- I dont like it.
As for airbags they make the car more expensive to repair when its wrecked.
Airbags help out a helluva lot when you get in a wreck. I'd rather be hit with a bag than hitting the steering wheel with my face or chest. I've been in a wreck when the airbags deployed and its not like they can snap your neck or anything. Maybe if you are a tiny girl or a kid they could be potentially dangerous.

What everyone said sounds good though. Newer cars=better safety features.
Two things, the airbag doesn't hit you, it's fully deployed and deflating by the time your body impacts it.

2nd, airbags can EASILY snap your neck, they deploy at 200-500mph and if you sit too close to the steering wheel it can easily kill you. You should sit at least 11" from the steering wheel while driving.

Tell that to my mom. She can almost rest her chin on the steering wheel. Yeah, I've never been too keen on airbags either--they scare me, particularly in an older car.

i'm in school for automotive technology (ford asset)... we just put an airbag in a garbage can full of water and deployed it. It blew the water a good 30 feet in the air, the impact is certainly NO joke..

my moms like 4'11 and sits redicilously close to the airbags. we hit a deer a few years ago in her chrysler labarron, the airbags deployed. all she had was a cut on her chin from the bag hitting her. thank God though.

The best thing to do is get a real good child seat and keep the kids in the back seat, because airbags or ABS don't help in the case of a roll over or a rear end or a side impact, but a really good child seat will help alot. When your kid grows enough and they don't need the child seat they will still have to sit in the back if you have airbags.

98 safer
I would rather have the 88 fox though, just personal preference but the 98 is almost assuredly "safer car"... at the same speeds/conditions anyway[8D]
