87 head unit removal

Default 87 head unit removal

I have an 87 Mustang GT. I have just purchased an aftermarket head unit for the radio. I can't seem to get the factory tape deck head unit off. i do not have the removal tool but i was wondering if anyone new any tricks that might work. If anyone can help me please do! Thanks, Dylan

I just ripped it out, as long as you have the install kit for the new radio you dont need anything from the old

Well i would rather not mess anything up because my car is in near mint conditon and for an 87 that is hard to find...i would like to keep all original parts incase i want to put them back in one day when i sell my baby....but thank you for replying

You can try paperclips or small screwdrivers or nails to undo the clips or just spend a few bucks and get the tools.

cut the 2 corners off of a wire cloths hanger and put them into the holes on the sides of the radio it will release the locks and it will slide right out .

well i got that hint from someone else and i tried the coat hanger and i pushed it in there and i felt a little pin that felt like it had a spring in it and it pushed in just barely and then i tried pushing the hanger to the side and then pulling the unit out.. am i doing something wrong?

you have to push the clothes hangers all the way in.
make hangers are in a u shape and it helps if the ends of the u are the same lengths.
then just pull the driver side one torwards the drivers door and vice versa.
while those are pulled torwards the door, pull the radio straight out.
you may have to wiggle it a lot but thats how we got my friends tape player out of his 87.

i guess il try it again...maybe i wasnt pushing hard enough? if anyone has any more tricks still feel free to help me out!
