Im a new owner of a 89 5.0 GT convertable, pickedherup for $600 and found a replacment trany (t-5) @ pick a part for$162, lucked out.Im a backyard Mechanic with alot of experience but before I go ahead and start a project I would like some feedback and this seems like a really great site! Im wondering if anyone has had a problem with the valve seals? When I accelerate or at first start she knocks slightly. I think it might be the valve seals, im hoping. i would rather avoid a rebuild. Can anyone help out?

Valve seals would make it puff smoke, not knock.
Start-up knoxk could be the coil filter. Change the oil and use a Motorcraft filter. Report back on the sounds after that.

dont just throw the old filter and oil out either examine it for any metal shavings, metal shavings are bad
