I had the same problem when the engine was cold (slow rpms, coughing, back firing through the intake) found out it was a vacuum line that had come loose, problem sloved.

In my case the first time it was the vacuum line from the charcoal cannister, 2nd time the PVC valve was out of the back of the intake. So you,ll just need to check all tyhe vacuum lines.
Btw I ran the codes when my charcoal vacuum line was unhooked and the code poped up as right o2 sensor.

strat with cleaning the mass air, and get throttle body cleaner where you are at it. Oxygen sensors run about $45 a pop but I would try that after cleaning the above if you are not apt to running codes like everyone is mentioning...

I just found a thread on how to run the codes. i had checked the vacuum lines once before by sparying carb cleaner on and listening for a surge from the flammable liquid, but found nothing. the car does idle funny, so I'm thinking its somewhere up near the TB with the IAC or TPS. i have cleaned the MAF before
