Default REAR GEARS & FEARS...

So, I have a 90' stallion, and it has between 350 and 400 horsepower out of 302 crate motor (just muscle)....
It has the original gears inside and you can tell I'm missing out on a great deal of performance...

Well, I have an Auburn Differential laying around (new), but its for 31 spline axles... IT's GEAR TIME.

This means I would need to get a kit, 31spline axles, and the gears of course = around $500.
Labor should cost around $500 and being in a tight budget, this is a pretty expensive project.

I'm thinking 3.73 gears...? It's a daily driver currently, but it'll probably retire to a weekend-insured car.

A tranny shop said if I did the project with him, he'd charge me $300. ==I don't even want to spend anything for labor.

Gears do makea big difference, and i think those #'s are at the crank right? I have 4.30's on minenot a dd i can tell you that, but for a stick i would not go more then 3.90 maybe 4.10's There is a ss camaro around me that has a 400ci engine with ported trick flows and 150 shot, he has 4.56 gears and a manual..........o my god is all i have to say, when the car DOES hook it shoots like a bullet! but ya i say dont fear the gear

More gear = less traction. Something to keep in mind if you run it on street tires.

Ummmmm. Your kidding, right? I have the same cam and gears that you do and I drive my car EVERY day. I still get about 200 miles off a full tank on the freeway.

Settle down now. I was simply saying that 4.30s arent THAT bad. If you have some self control and dont hall *** everywhere (most of us dont), you can still get decent mileage with those gears. Personally, i want something higher, like 3.73s or 3.90s. Sorry if i offended you, but if you buy and plan to build a mustang, gas mileage shouldnt be a big concern. You will only be dissapointed. If it is, then go buy a honda and drive it everyday.

P.S.

Its funny how people get on the defensive and start name calling. You dont know anything about me. Thats pretty immature.
