I swapped out my rear gears to 3.73 from 2.73 and honestly there was a slight gain in mpg in the city which I primarily drive. Highway dove a little but really not that much. Once i swapped out those gears I stopped "Bogging" down in the city. And i don't really get good gas mileage but i also rebuilt the motor to 331...

if you make 6 passes at the track you can burn about a 1/4 tank

thats like 3 gallons per mile and a 1/2... so a little jumping on it does burn it up. but you need to figure mpg... not miles per tank

top it off, zero out the odo, then run it about 1/2 tank on the FREEWAY not the city and refill it... see how many gallons it took to fill and divide the miles driven by it. city mileage is way low.. and of if your mixed driving like 1/2 city 1/2 freeway your only gonna get 230 miles from a tank if you go easy

i get 20+ mpg on the freeway w/ 4.10's, i keep it under 3k too which is about 70-75
