A true 1/2 inch is kinda sloppy. I could see where it would cause problems but i'm not sure about it being "way out". When i've worked on mine before i would change it if it had that much slack since i was already there. I'm sure you've posted your problem before but are you having a timing issue?

yea i finally got it to run but thats having the rotor a tooth out towards the pass. side and having the tfi pushed all the way to the pass side. that was the only way it would fire up, but i could not get a reading at all with the timing gun.

No. A slack chain will not cause a misfire or bring the cam timing out far enough to keep it from running.
On that note alone. Slack chain equals 2-3 degree in cam retard, which actually makes for a strong running 5L.
I've had them touching the cover before and still running mint.
