RE: so who else has been through this?
well if it gets hot there i would go with a little lower, but when i had the old one in (150) the car almost never got up to temp.
i mean, 7-8miles on the highway, and still it was like 2 lines below normal....
thats why i went with the 195, and i wanted quicker warmups.
its better, but still takes forever to warm

If it makes you feel any better I had a sticker on one mustang that said "honk if parts fall off". It got put there after the alternater fell off, another alternator blew up, and I almost lost the crank pulley.

I have 128k miles on my GT. In the2.5 years I'veowned it, I've spent $2500 to $3k on repairs (mostly). Radiator, water pump, harmonic balancer, motor mounts, P/S pump, clutch, valve cover gaskets, brakes, alternator, battery, thermostat/housing, plugs/cap/rotor, serp belt, A/C repair, clutch quadrant...and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. I look at it this way: every thing you replace is one less thing that will fail in the future. Sometimes it snowballs, but when it does, just keep your hand in your wallet, and head under the hood until the car is reliable again.
These cars are 20ish years old now, so even though the car ran well when I got it, I boughtit knowing that I'd be repairing it left and right for a while before itwould startto become reliable. These days, I consider it reliable...but only after much toil and finance.
My grandmom told me something when I was 16 and having car trouble, that has stuck with me all these years. I talked to her about needing to put $500 intomy car (73 Superbeetle at the time) to get it up and running again. I expressed disdain about having to spend so much money on the car. She put it into perspective for me by simplysaying "Well can you buy another car for $500? Then just spend the money and move on." Good philosophy when dealing with old cars.
