Best weight flywheel for a DD car? (new PICS)
Is a stock 5.0 mustang flywheel 20lbs?
For a daily driver should I get a heaiver one like 33 lbs, whats best between fuel miliage and comfort in stop and go traffic?
THANKS!
EDIT/Update: I got a cast Iron flywheel it was a paltry $87 hard to say no to that and this is my DD car, my other mustang will be the max effort street/strip mach. This one is DD & perhaps some handling/braking upgrades.
By the way it (stock for a 1984 F150 truck w/ ext balance) is 26lbs
It appears that the stock 5.0 flywheel is 21lbs, not too big difference to loose sleep over IMO

RE: Best weight flywheel for a DD car?
The lighter the better. Everyone I talked to with an aluminum that drives it on the street said it's not an issue. I plan on going with an aluminum flywheel the next time I change my clutch.

Thanks! So do you say that its good to go for the 10lb units or would you think 15lb better for DD, or just a light billet steel unit? Is it true that the stock unit is 20lbs?
I have often heard both: that heavier than stock and lighter than stock are the best for Drag racing (I think it depends vars here), but I usually hear that stock or slightly heavier is better for DD, but I am open to help!
Looks like $500-$600 for the light aluminum on summitracing for my app range 10-20lbs
$320-$400 for the billet steel range 24-40 lbs
Thanks for the help

Lighter has many racing advantages. Many members on this forum are drag racing enthusiasts therefore you will havemany votes for a lighter flywheel. Fact is heavier is better for daily driving but I see no advantage than going heavier than stock. It also makes for a smoother idle but really, in a Mustang, is that really important?
For a low torque, drag car. The kind that leaves the line on the limiter and dumps the clutch. They can take advantage of flywheel inertia.
I have a 40lbs wheel in my Dodge Ram. No exaggeration here but as an example. I can rev my engine, kill the ignition and dump the clutch. It will lay rubber.
BTW, it's so smooth and easy to drive. It's made mea fan of heavy flywheels for trucks.

Ive got a Spec aluminum one in my 5.0. I dont daily drive it but when I do drive it somewhere (without beating the crap out of it) I am able to drive it comfortably. Im not the best with a manual either but I can control it. To be honest I think I stalled it more with the stocker than I did with the aluminum one. Also mine has a steel friction surface. It weighs 14 lbs. Its a huge difference compared to the stocker. I love it.

Ford Racing Iron Flywheel Stock Replacement – 21 lbs - 397-M-6375-B302
Centerforce Aluminum Flywheel – 11.9 lbs - CTF-900320
Centerforce Steel Flywheel – 27.6 lbs - CTF-700320
Fidanza Aluminum Flywheel – 13.5 lbs - # 186501
A lighter flywheel will create a little more finikal scenarios, but nothing you cannot handle.
