Refitting a 641/2 Stang with a 5.0 Drivetrain - Any suggestions?
I'm a newbie to the forum and starting a project that will probably wind up costing millions???? A group of us are restoring a 64 1/2 Mustang with a 95 5.0 - 5 speed manual transwith computer, headers, transmission and such.
Anyone ever do this before? Can anyone advise of the problems or pit falls they incurred? I know we'll have to beef up the rear end and suspension along with converting the stock auto trans to a manual and installing the clutch system.
Any comments about the front suspension?
Are there any conversion kits available?

what was the 64 stock?
ive not done this, but ive seen it done, and its pretty straightforward
as for the rear end, just get a 9 inch out of a junkyard mustang or something, should bolt up fairly easy, and the clutch, a company called JMC motorsports makes a hydraulic clutch setup for classics, and you can just get a brake/clutch assy. from a junked car.
your biggest concern at this point should be getting all the vacuum and electrical stuff hooked up really, aside from maybe needing to change the tranny crossmember, the setup should just drop in

I havn't done this conversion, but I had considered it with my 65 fastback before I had to sell it. There have been several publications outlining this swap. I don't think it's particularly challenging.
I belive you will have to re-use your 65's oil pan because of the difference in the shape of the underside of the classic vs the modern stang. I think you'll need a felxible dipstic tube.
You'll need to get some adapter or bracket for the transmission, depending on if you use the T5 or the AOD. If i remember correctly they need more space than the classic transmission.
You should get a stronger rear end. If you want a 9" you'll have to find one with the houseing cut down and the right size axles since they didn't make them in the width of the 1st gen Mustang. I have no idea if a 8.8 from a 5.0 is going to fit without some cutting, someone else should know. At a min you'd probalby have to weld some perches for the leaf springs.

I wouldnt use a '95 ECM... they run the engine lean from factory.... and they are very cranky computers to mod
like Mjr said, look for a fox harness/ecu
