Default Gear Ratios.

Well, my dad has it set in his little mind the Cobra needs new gears in the rear. He thinks 3.73's are too much for it. He bitches constantly about driveability. When really the issue is his driving. When he drives a stick shift he likes to shift constantly, he can't put it in fifth gear and cruise he has to have it in 4th, down to third, back to fourth, hit fifth, come back down to third ect. And with 3.73's thats a lot of shifting and changing RPMs. As where I just throw it in fifth and cruise.

So basically he wants 3.55's now, I'm fighting it the best I can. I love my third gear pulls, cruising along in fourth, drop it down to third and lay on it and boy does she rip. My dad seems to have it in his head that 3.55's will solve every damn driveability issue.

He's also been complaining about the exhaust a bit and talking of making it a little quieter.

I'm afraid my dad is trying to turn our car into a ***** mobile, I can't let that happen...

3.55's will only make it more a turd!!heck I swapped out my 7.5 rear with 3.45 gears in my 92 when it finally blew in favor of a 8.8 and installed 3.73's and picked up 1 .5 mph right out of the box

I've tried telling him it will feel slower ect. He thinks 3.55's are the answer to the worlds problems. He's one of those people where once something is in his head it's near impossible to change. And the rear end leaks so I'm going to be opening it up to reseal soon and so now he is looking a Ford racing 3.55 kits... Ugh I can't let him change them.

3.73's for sure if you want the most out of er'. Trust MJR46, when I was deciding to put gears in my car I listened to his advice. I picked up 2 MPH in the 1/8 and 1/4. After M/T drag radials, and 4.10's my car dropped from a 15.238 at 91, to a 14.672 at 93. Gears were the best thing I've done to the car.... I trap at 5000rpm on the stock tack, and the tires are 27' tall

I know MJR knows his stuff, my dad talked to a couple guys so now he thinks he knows what needs to be done. Some guy at his work had 4.10's in his car and couldn't get traction on the 1/4 so he got 3.55's, which gained traction which gave him faster 1/4 mile times. So now my dad thinks we need 3.55's and that it might even make the car faster ! But it won't, the guy at his work who had the 4.10's need a driver mod and maybe he could do something with those 4.10's he had in it. Sounds like he didn't have a clue of what he was doing and just dumped it on the launch.

Yeah, I'll never go back lol. I need a driver mod too (2.200 60' lol) but that's what test and tune is for . Use your jedi powers and change the old mans mind lol. Good luck on the build, make sure you buy a good re-build kit too .

Both, we're stilling toying with the idea of finding a nice notch to switch everything into this winter. Looked at a 87 tonight, too much rust though.

you need to tell your dad his mistake was not changing up his suspension to properly support his 4.10's. you are correct in the driver mod/driver decision to switch gears. IMO i'd keep the 3.73's and correct your suspension and your dad's driver mod.
