Going to look at an 85 CHP SSP
#12
Good to know. Thanks for the clarification. I have a call into the seller about going to look at the car again. I need to check more closely for rust and look at some of the SSP items to determine a fair value in my mind. I'm curious to see if I can make out the car's CHP unit number through the paint - there's a spot where I should be able to see it.

Well, I bought that SSP. The only rust is along the bottom edge of both doors (fairly common). Got it licensed yesterday. This thing is a beast. Yes, I've driven faster cars, but this old police car has a really cool vibe/personality to it.
I located the CHP Unit Number - 8395. However, it was located in an unlikely spot. Usually, the CHP would use a paint pen and write the number above the door's data tag which you can sometimes read through the CHP repaint. On my car, you could not see it there. But in the proper lighting, you can see that they wrote the number at the top of the driver's side back side window. The number is etched into the glass. You can barely see it, so it may be hard to capture in a picture. I've already been contacted by the owner of CHP #8397, whose VIN is very close to mine.
No plans to restore it to active-duty specs. The drivetrain was rebuilt >10 years ago, but it hasn't clocked many miles since then. I will attend to the cosmetic stuff, and keep it in its post-auction condition (or better). And yes, I will be hitting the track with it next season from time to time.

He was asking $4K, and I originally offered $3300. I came up more than he came down, but I am quite happy with the purchase.
I sandblasted and painted the 10-holes black, and with the bright aluminum center caps the car again reflects its SSP heritage.
