potential bronco buy

my dads friend is selling a 1993 ford bronco. i just looked at it today and its in decent shape. it was locked and blocked in but it said 5.8 on the window.

its an eddie baur edition so its fully loaded. really not alot of rust on it especially for a new england truck... got less than my car (lol sad). the drivers door panel was apart but all there (power controls hanging by wires).

says $2200 on the window i could prob get it for $1400.

is the 5.8 reliable or could this be a money pit? i drive about 50 miles a day to work and back. i assume it gets probably 10 mpg or worse.

let me know if u guys have owned one and what you thought, thanks.

my dads 94 f150 has been super reliable

Taken care of it will be reliable.

put the 351 in the stang and the 302 in the bronco ;)

what kills the bronco's of that vintage is rust from the inside out starting up on the radiator core support frame mount area.....also the brake lines were prone to severe rust:)

Watch out if you have to change the water pump. The bolts like to rust to the block. Also the rear quarter panels will rust on you from the inside out and outside in. It can be fixed of course but it's tedious.
They are reliable and get about 14mpg stock, 26mpg max modded. And the gas tank is 36gallons, so watch the pump or you'll be in trouble.
The passenger side of the dash likes to crack and start bouncing around(they had a recall on all F150,250,350, ect on it), but an "L" bracket will solve it.
Hope that helps.

That truck was not particularly known for reliability when it was new. It's going to be a money pit 15 years later.

If you buy it, plan on lots of little things failing. Don't spend money fixing them.

351's are sick, I have a 92 f250 with 176k miles still running strong!

mjr46 10-19-2008 10:42 PM

351 ftw!!!!!!!!!!!:)

rmodel65 10-19-2008 11:07 PM

my dads has 205k on his, last night he hit 2 deers so it might be a total after the insurance get done with it? if so im buying it back and putting the 351 in my fox after ftw

its got rust on the front frame mount but its still solid.

the rear perch's are rusty but appear solid as well.

still need to hear it run and drive it around.

already had some brake lines replaced, also new radias arm mounts??

its got push button 4x4 wich im not a fan of. if i buy it me and my friend are gunna convert it to manual

its a ford it always costs money. fix or repair daily lol

Why would you buy a gutless gas pig for a DD when you have such a long commute to and from work? Get yourself a reliable Japanese 4 banger. Those Bronco's were junk, your just asking for trouble IMO...My commute is about 12 miles both ways total and I fill the 50 litre tank in my Sentra twice a month. At current prices that works out to slightly less than $100 a month in fuel. The money I save goes right into the fox...

i have a '96 with the 5.0 and 5 speed tran's.

NO RUST on the truck, minor dent's and scratch's, dirty interior, cracked dash, 171k miles, and i have NOT have a issue other then having the local auto store sell me 3 falty battery's.

i think the clutch is going out, so that's on my list of thing's to do.

I average 12-14mpg, ive seen 16mpg ONCE.

im also at 5400ft above sealevel, so if i was at sealevel it would be a little worse.

the truck is raised a bit, and has slightly bigger then OEM tire's so that might account for it.

i payed $1800 for it, and its been great for me, plow's through any amont of snow.

the 351 will suck down more gas, but has ALOT more trq then the 5.0's.

the 5.8's also ONLY come with a automatic, but ive heard they are very strong.

the back window's on the bronco's tend to go out offten due to moisture build up. so check to see if the back window go's down, and the door open's.

good luck!

Broncos are bad ass, i had a 1986 w/ a 302 and a sick granny gear. That thing would climb almost anything, never get high centered, handle the mud, sand, and snow. All this with plenty of FREAKIN' room in the back ( it is where my wife fell in love with me ). And 3 of my best friends.

Just kidding about the last part, but the trucks are sweet.
