Mid 80's 5.0s
Hey I've been on here for over a year now. I drive an 87 4banger stang with 5spd. I'm hoping to move up to a 5.0 next summer. I know the 87 and greater 5.0's are awesome for modding and reliable. My question is how do 83-86s fair in dependability? Are they worth looking for?

well, heres the dilemma, 83-85's were carbed, and didnt make as much power as the 86, which was speed density, like the 87-88 aeros, but didnt have flycut pistons (neither did the 83-85's) therefore dont take top end mods as well. your best bet is an 89-93, because of the mass air, but an 87-88 will work fine, you can always do a mass air swap later

mods will prob come later. i'll be lucky to get the car lol. 87-89s have been popping up in my price range. yeah speed density will be fine for CAI. my dads 87 has +250k miles so i know they are good. i just had curiosity of the older ones. if i can avoid carb though all the better.

speed density is fine, but doesnt take to mods nearly as well as mass air, if you plan on leaving it stock for a while, speed density will do you just fine, jsut be sure to upgrade when you do anything major

^^^ i agree the year has nothing to do with it really as really it is how the have been treated and what kind of shape/ miles they have on them
but i agree that they will go a long ways my last fox (91' gt) had a 180,xxx miles on it and pulled the motor for my new one and cylinders still all had cross hatching and was still in the decent oil pressure range and didnt smoke or use any oil really.
