Over torquing could be your problem. In my 70 Nova i had a starter bolt that would not stay tight and it was eating my flywheel. I replaced it four times under warranty. The last time i replaced it i got a good flash light and looked around because it is not common to have that many problems. What i found was two hair line cracks in the block where my starter bolts went.....obvioulsy i was over tightening them and wound up splitting the block

believe me it's not that I've broken the bellhousing doing that. It doesn't kick back at all, and the flywheel is pretty much brand new,it's newer than this last starter

I don't know what was causing mine to back out but I think it was the bell. It didn't do that at all with the other trans I had. I just put a nut on the other end of the bolt and I havn't had a problem since.

I just bought me an $8 starter cap (a whole lot better than $80) and the blue loctite fixing to go get to work

I had that happen once in my truck, the dang thing fell off on I-95 and I drug it for 10 miles before I exited and heard some sort of scraping noise. Not much left of it after that. I bought a new one and it cracked the top ear almost right away but I put some loctite on the bottom and it's been holding for the last 2 years.

I drove with my top ear broke for about 2 months and with both broke for a couple of weeks until I just got tired of getting under the car and loosening the bolts and repositioning the starter. My flexplate chewed the hell out of my starter but luckily no damage to the flexplate.
