What would happen if I........
#11
I figured a new set of gears would be around $200 and I figured it would cost around $300 labor for someone to install them. I dont know for sure, that's just what I'm guessing.
so I can install the pinion seal without removing all the internal guts of the rear end? I'm confused now. Someone else told me different. If I can do it like you say, then I'll diffently do that.

You can replace the pinion seal without taking the gears out of the differential. Unbolt the driveshaft from the pinion flange, remove the pinion nut, pull the pinion flange off, pry the pinion seal out, use a little but of silicone on the inside of the new pinion seal and lube up the rubber part with gear lube then lightly tap it into the differential housing. Use a little bit of silicone on the pinion gear splines and slide the pinion flange on using a new pinion nut and loctite. Reinstall the pinion nut to the same tightness and location as it was originally at and just snug it a little more (don't over do it or you will burn up your pinion bearings), reinstall the driveshaft with the flanges matching up to original locations, top off the differential with gear lube and hope for the best.
