what books/manuals do u guys recommend for a first time rebuilder. i work in a shop and have alot of experince , just not rebuilding a ford V8. i need a book with all the engine specs and so on that i need to check along with all the little oil galleys i should clean. thanks for ur help

I just ordered a "How to rebuild the small block ford" from amazon the other day. I have tinkered with the motors a bit before but it's been a while, so figured I'd get something to help me along. Plus I'm going to put it together in my 12x12 shed in the evenings when I have time so it would be good to have handy.

Some advice...

Dive right in. Get a digital camera, a couple boxes, some large ziplock bags, a pen, and post it notes. Label the living crap out of everything you take off the motor as you do it (note in the bag, not just stuck to it), photo the things that seem even the least bit tricky looking. It will be a while before you put it back on, so be very specific in your labeling, and reference the photos on the post it notes for the tricky ones. I took it a step further and cleaned all the parts before I bagged them. Easy off oven cleaner will eat thick grime much faster than any OTC degreaser, just wear gloves, it'll eat your skin pretty handily too.

As long as you are going that far into it, you will want to have the block bored out, to make sure everything is in good form.

The first time I took the motor out of my car I put the bolts in ziplock bags with a index card saying what they were for and all the hoses and wires I put a pc of masking tape around the end with a number and a pc of tape around where it went with a matching number. Helped me alot, gonna wish I did it the last time too I'm sure.

I have both the Haynes and Chilton books.
Both are really necessary as they both cover different things...........
