Does 9 MPG sound right?

Well if my calculations are right i am getting around 9 mpg. My odometer is 20 miles off for every 100. sow it would show 80 miles. I have been very light on the gas, and its been city driving. Its all stock, and i bought it this summer its got 200K miles. Can this be a indication of bad vacum leak?

if it had a bad vaccum leak it's idle high and or run rough at idle, you can run a koer test and see if any codes exist that may point to a prob:)

...You're going to loose some MPG during the winter months! ...have you looked into getting a new speedo gear for your car?!

...Also, when's the last time you tuned the car up? ... & making a lot of shorts trips?

9mpg isnt right. start with a tune up 200k is starting to get pretty high in the miles and the motor is probably getting tired

Getting a tune up isn't a bad idea, but it sounds like you had gears installed in your car without changing out the speedometer gear. Because of this both your odometer and your speedometer are inaccurate so if you are using the odometer to calculate your mpg you will not get an accurate result. You said it only shows 80 mi for every 100 mi you drive so you are most likely getting better than 9 mpg since you are diving farther on each tank of gas than your odometer would indicate.

i know it had a rebuilt transmission befor i got it. and also my speedo is about 7-10 mph slower than my actual speed. so i will look into what gears are in there.

plus you really cant go by the odometer beause it is off by a % and not just a certain mileage.

TrimDrip 01-09-2009 04:07 PM

fill it up and mark your mileage. when you fill it up again do the math of your actual mileage. That is the only way to know unless you change the speedo gear on the transmission.

9 mpg is waaay off, these cars could be gas guzzlers at times but not that bad, especially if its mostly stock.

Somethings wrong with yours, do you see raw fuel coming out the exhaust?

My H/C/I geared 5 spd car gets 20mpg on average
