Well, the stock intake chokes the stock heads and cam....and you have P&P'd heads and a cam..... So I'd say it's safe to say that yes, you DO need an intake.

on my car with stock intake, ported heads and 1.7 RR on a stock cam, I made max power at 4900 rpms. Now that I have a better intake it does pull longer, but I haven't had it on the dyno to find out how much yet.

None of that should matter. The stock intakes are really restrictive. Do you have a bigger throttle body and maf?
