Is my local mustang shop ripping me off?

Find out what kind of converter they are going to put in it before you have them do it.

yes....
Dropped my car off @ my local mustang shop the other day for two things.
1. to diagnose and fix the whine coming from my AOD trans.
2. to install a shift kin in my AOD trans.
They just called me.
Said the whine is a bad torque converter. and that they will replace it for $400 parts and labor.
And then,
He said that a shift kit costs $400 to install. Plus the price of the kit I want. So $450-500 all said and done.
So that's $800-$900 I'd be spending to make my trans not whine and shift firmer.
What do you guys think? I think the torque converter sounds almost fair, but the price he quoted to INSTALL a shift kit is ****ing outrageous....

so the convertor is whining??? are you sure it's not you who is doing the whining??? lol...anyway....I'd make sure it's not the front pump on the tranny making the noise...either way tranny has to come down.... as for shops and what they charge, trust me the shop owner knows why he charges what he does.....if you feel like you can get a better deal..shop around, but personally I look for someone who has the experience doing the repair, not the cheapast ***** on the block, cause you'll often get what you pay for....Good luck

I'd shop around for a nice used converter. I bought a used AODE w/stronger 4r70w internals and a Precision Industries 2700 stall for $400(guy swapped his auto for a manual). At the time I did not know what kind of deal I made, until I realized I made a killer deal. After my stock AODE took a dump a while back, my 4r70w AODE has been working great with the blower. Also, you can change the converter by yourself pretty easy. Basic tools, jacks and a Transmission jack is all you really need. When I was 16, I pulled my tranny by myself with my friend handing me my tools(took two hours to take down and four to get it back up). The shift kit can be installed in just a couple of hours. Also, now would be a good time to add a transmission cooler. You can do it all in a weekend and save some $$.
