I take that back, 86 has flat top pistons, And don't quote me but I believe 89 was the first year for the forged internals, up through 92 ?
We got our 91 shortblock, (block and internals) on craigslist for $75, disassembled it, had the machine shop clean it up install new cam bearings, then we rebuilt the rest, I'd recommend just doing something like that, saving up money for parts as you go and since it already has a motor you could still drive it while you build the other one.
But thats just me.

and fuel injected or not... will have no impact on the block or the heads... just swap the intake and install the proper distributor.. and hook it up to the rest of the archaic antiquated electronics in your car

I guess you didn't like my answer.
Most motors from the mid seventies to the late 80's were emission pigs and low on hp.

A stock 1982 was rated at 157 HP at 4200 RPM and 240 lb/ft at 2400 RPM. If you are looking for HP ratings and other misc. year specific info, check out www.mustanggt.org. They have limited, but useful info on years 1982-1993 mustangs including HP and torque ratings and changes made on a year by year basis.
