Default Rear end question

Brought a disk 8.8 (1997 cobra rear), guy said it had a bent axle, drove fine but the passenger wheel wobbled. have gotten a chance to replace the axle, but was told by a friend that it was impossible to bend a shaft without messing up the axle assembly...

So did i get ripped off or is it likely that its just the shaft.

your friend is wrong, you can have a bent axle and the housing still be fine, I know , I did it once before, pull the axle and install a new and or used one and see if it spins true or swap the one side with the other to test the trueness side to side

Your friend doesn't have a clue. You can slide into a curb and bend the axle at the flange. I bet I've replace several hundred bent axles and about the only time the tube was bent was in a real collision. You can bend the axle flange sliding into a muddy ditch.

haha thanks, i need to open it up and make sure its the stock carrier before i pick up the axle (and decide if i want to do 31 spline if it is stock)

For the record, my friend is no idiot. He's an old timer but knows his stuff for the most part, his information just tends to be outdated.

outdated or not... you can still bend an axle shaft without bending the tubes... whether it be in a late model mustang, or a 50's-60's car...

your friend... is an idiot
