looking at this kit

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...&view=1&N=700+

i have a few questions pertaining to it. it says its internal balance and ive seen some say external balance. whats the difference? i think what i want is a prebalanced assembly which the one i posted is so all id have to do is assemble it all in the block and then put on the 28 oz.? harmonic balancer and the flexplate for my trans? or do i need to assemble it and then have a machine shop balance it? but it says its a balanced kit so im kind of confused on that one. i was hopeing i could do all the work at home and not have to bring anything to a machine shop. how did you take care of the balance on your 331? im kind of confused on this part

i still dont know what intake i want to go with so if someone has any pointers there..also what size throttle body is this motor going to require? should i use a 70mm or 75mm? i think im going to use 24 pound injectors since there good for the 350ish hp im shooting for, although would i need bigger injectors if i wanted to throw nitrous at it? sorry for all the questions ive just never built up an efi motor.

Just saw this thread for the first time so...... answering the first question, i get about 12 mpg, but its the way i drive, and i don't drive it far each day, so no freeway ever gets used, a lot of time goes into starting the car and shutting off since i drive less than 2 miles every time i drive.

back to your injector question, i run 24 lb's and I'm running on the edge with them. 30's would be the better way to go in my opinion as it leaves more room for additions down the road.

thanks saleenpride. so it sounds like around 12mpgs city, i can deffinately live with that. how well are you liking the afr 185 heads with your combo? any guess as to how much hp your combo is making? i also see you got a tune on yours. care to elaborate on which crane cam your running?

if you dont put a stock 302 bottom end in, do a 347. the 347 will last just as long as the 331. i built a 331 after reading all the bad info on the net, i wish i had the extra cubes. dont expect mpg with a 351. heavier rotating assembly which reduces efficiency.
the old saying, 302 parts make 302 power is true. the trick to beating this, is to learn what exactly 302 parts are.

with my 331 (with trashed bearings) aode, 3.27's, eddy rpm heads, rpm 2 intake, xe270hr-14 and on a basic tune, i got around 20mpg. the car was a dog though.

go fast or save gas, take your pick. you wont get both with out spending double the money.

a 4.6L 2v in a towncar (94) with 3.08's, aode, and street tires, i was able to pull a 16.1 @ 86mph w/ a 2.3 60'. 100k mile motor too.

you would be some where around one second slower than a mustang with the same parts, due to weight alone.

im pretty set on running a 331. it will have forged rods and pistons, maybe a forged crank if i feel like spending a little extra, it will also have a main and valley girdle on the engine for strength. other than that its a regular ho 5.0 block. at this point im going to not worry about gas mileage and just build the engine to perform how i want it to. im probably going with afr alum heads since i plan on being slightly north of 10:1 compression ratio and i dont think iron heads will run there safely on pump gas, although ill use premium in it. i have 3.55 gears currently but might switch to 3.73s later on but im going to build the motr up before i go there and see how i like it with 3.55s. im going to do some research to see what torque converter i should run since im going to be using an aod trans. also i havent picked a cam or intake yet. im shooting for 350-400hp at the crank which im told is quite easily attainable with a 331 and should be able to use the 24lb injectors im told.

what do you think that valley girdle is going to do?

if your going to buy a forged crank, you might as well use an aftermarket block, if not dont waste the extra money.

400hp is easy to get with the RIGHT parts, without you may not get there, which is possible. 400hp is only a number, there are other variables to consider.

get atleast 30lb injectors. 42's or 50 somethings would be better since you wont have to upgrade later and a 56 can work just as well as 24.

im not a guru by any means, just my 2 cents.
