Default Question from the new guy

Hello guys, I got me 1992 LX 5.0 about a month ago and decided to join this forum for some help/advice. The car is one of the few unmolested ones in california, it was owned by a grandpa since 1997. Not a single mod. It is an AOD ,but seeing the condition of the car I had to buy it.

So far I was performing the maintenance: fuel pump, fuel filter, oil, air filter, plugs.
Now the question I have is concerning the AOD shifting. I never had an automatic that is not computer controlled,so I am at a loss here. How do you make it hold the gear while at WOT to the redline ? If I leave it in OD/D it will shift 1-2 at 4600,2-3 the same. I can hold the first by starting in 1, than shifting it to D. But this puts me in 3rd gear.

I have read contradictory information on how to shift the tranny, so please clarify this. From what I read you can do 1-D shift, than go D-1 and this would put tranny into second and it is fine. Other people say that this would quickly destroy the bands in the tranny. Help me out!

Few pics of the car.

on my 93 thunderbird i had it would shift into 2nd,then i would pull it back into 1st and it would stay in 2nd until i shifted into drive and overdrive.i never had any problems doing that, and i put 50 to 60 thousand hard miles on the car and it never failed me.

holding your gears to redline is just wasting your time.

in this particular case, the car is smarter than you are

So 1-D-1 shifting is OK to do ? And yes, my redline statement was a bit mispaced. I am used to my 540i holding gears all the way,and I am aware that 5.0 runs out of steam by 5500 rpm. Thanks for replies guys.
