Default Horsepower and the Automatic Transmission

I have an '89 5.0 that I want to start fixing up. It has a low mileage 93 GT automatic transmission with a shift kit in it. How much horsepower do you think this transmission can handle?

i have a 93 lx with an aod and and have been trying to get a straight answer on that for some time.but from what i have come to belive is 350 flywheel is about max, some say way less but i have talked to a guy pushing 350 with 3:73 and a transgo shift kit and it's held up,the odd street race,no track.the 1-2-1 shift is hard on em and high rpm shift to od so don't do those two things and your probably good.i have a shift kit for mine and am doing h/c/i right now,i'll worry about it when she breaks, but there are a ton of options out there for aod's,so i'll save my money and buy it when i need it.

The AOD's are pretty weak transmissions, especially their OD's. I have an AODE in mine. it is slightly stronger, but is electronically controlled. I made 271rwhp and 311rwtq and it ran fine. It had a Transgo shift kit, PI stall and trans cooler. After I threw in the blower, it began slipping after only a couple of months of light-moderate driving. Stay under 300rwhp and you should be fine. Make sure you get a transmission cooler. It's cheap insurance to keep the transmission lasting longer. The #1 cause for transmission failure is heat.

its a combination of how you treat the tranny, the hp level and the amount of traction you have. with nothing more then a shift kit and a stock rebuild i was making 461rwhp through my aod but i never had traction with that setup. never took it to the track just had fun on the street and the tranny held just fine. my current aod is built for 750fwhp and im starting to worry that after i crank the boost that might not be enough....especially if i end up adding n2o. if you exceed the hp limit of the tranny more then likely itll just start slipping bad and youll need a rebuilt. the input shaft wont snap untill a lot more power then most people make

about 150

thats what it was designed to handle anyways in your grand mammys merc marquis

you can work on it... but it's not cheap

i busted 3 of them in my '90 that bought brand new and it never went faster than 14.40's

all in 5 years, i'm anti-aod to say the least
