Brake pad has come loose?!
Idk if this is common or not but ive this horrible grinding problem and i know what it is now, it appears that the brake pad on the inner part of the rotor on the front passenger side has come loose and i can see it wedged up behind the rotor and dust shield i think that part on the back is called.
Anyways my question is im going to need new pads and rotor on that 1 side, but im prob gunna need a new caliper too? since the caliper is just against the rotor bare now? Ive never done brakes before, just engine work so i dont know much about it. Should i just do the brake job myself or take it too a shop and if so what would that cost?(in south subs of chicago) Bc i dont know much about bleeding the lines if i have to take the caliper off. So i just wanna hear your guys inputs and if you have any good guides to doing a brake job.
This isnt for my mustang its for my 2000 ford ranger, and im asking you guys bc your the most technical and knowledgeable on the forum, and i know if i just post this in off topic i will get no help at all so im hoping this doesnt get moved and you guys can give me a hand. thanks guys

My cavalier wasn't squeeking or making any noise at all. Then the brakes started pulsating.
I found out, while changing the pads and rotors, that the slide pins seized up and caused the inner pads to get the abuse. Both sides of the front were worn past the lining and was steel on steel. Meanwhile the outer pads that rely on the slide pins were almost new.
Sometimes the only way to find out is open it up and LOOK.

I've heard of pads breaking off their steel backing plate for various reasons. Overheating, rust, cheap workmanship or maybe their were defetive and their bond didn't hold.
From you asking about just doing one side. I'm assuming the other side is still thick and you want to reuse them.
My advice is no. Whatever made that broken pad fail is most likely going to happen to the other pad.
Replace EVERYTHING with 1st line premium parts.
