Default 1987-1990 a good year to perform a resto on?

Hey there,

I'm planning on getting my father-in-laws 1978 Corvette back up and running. It's been sitting in a garage for well over 12 years. I will be doing this for the experience. I want to get my own project car. I have never worked on a car previously. I did take an auto class in high school and know the basics.

I have been looking at prices and anything that is 1st gen (what I really want to restore) is either already restored or a rust bucket. The 3rd gens seem to be much cheaper and in decent condition. For example, I can pick up a ~87 GT in running condition w/ no rust for just over $5000. I would be LUCKY as hell to find anything earlier without rust for that much, and it probably wouldn't have an interior or an engine.

I want to keep it as close to the older cars as possible. My questions are:

1. How electronic are these? Are they comparable to the 1st gen engine-wise?
2. How are the bodies? Are they comparable to the 1st gen as well?
3. How is the re-sale? As this is just a fun restore project, I don't expect to make a profit. But, once I restore it can I expect to at least make some money back? I would then use the money from this to buy a 1st gen to restore, as I'll have a lump of cash and experience.

Thanks.

If you are already spending 5K for a 87 you are not going to get much more back. People can find close to mint foxes for that price.

See my car? I bought it as you see it for $1200. 90 GT with 120k miles. Don't even think about spending 5k on anything less than a mint fox with 1 mile on it lol

The 87-93 fox-bodys are fairly inexpensive and easy to work on.Those are great years to play with.

If you need any resto parts for the vette of fox, check out our site,we carry quite a few seals and interior parts for both vehicles.

Bought mine for 800.00, have had a BALL with it - got close to 10K in her now... and I'll never, ever, get my money back out of her. Wouldn't sell it anyway. *G* Let me add though - parts, OEM and aftermarket, are indeed plentiful and reasonably priced.
