Is MSD necessary?
 

I have a vortech a trim with about 12#s of boost on a stock bottom end e cam edelbrock preforer heads trick flow track heat intake 65mm throttle body 42# injectors and a stock ignition system with a ford racing coil. Is and MSD box necessary? I have a 6 btm but its not hooked up and its second hand so im not even sure if it works. I dont really have the money to spend on the MSD but this car has been giving me enough trouble as it is so I will spend it if I have to. I have been getting many different opinions, so what do you guys think?

I would hook the btm up, why??? if memory serves me right the btm is boost timing master with the boost retard function, under full boost it 'd be wise with 12 psi to have somewhat of a timing retard function to eliviate potential detonation:)

Yea that is my plan. Im just the kind of person who thinks the whole msd hype is a hoax, so thats why I need the opinions of people like you who have more experience than myself.

depends on what your needs are , whether or not the msd thing is a hoax, in my case my 85 is carbed and no oem distributor can give me the control over timing like the msd gives me, if it weren't for the msd in my case I'd of blown the motor long ago if I were not able to control / limit total advance:)

Yea I get that, I also think part of the problems I was having with my car was because of lack of spark so i guess msd would solve that.

if it's happening under heavy boost it could be spark blow out, re gap the plugs smaller if so and add a high energy ignition system, that;s to say what I mentioned is even the case:)

Yeah totally agree. You def want mpre spark to burn the extra fuel. And the BTM is a must.

on cars as old as ours, i would never run one boosted without an upgraded ignition system

ok I was thinking the same I just needed the opinion of you experienced boosted guys!
