My brother once ran a 89 truck dry on oil for 2 hours. It still ran for another 3 years before we ran into problems with it.

if it got on the floor it's your fault and you should clean it up at your cost cause that's not the way you found it

i did that to a newer grand caravan, but the oil filter goes directly up. the gasket never came off when the old filter came off. i was in the car when i heard a pretty bad ticking noise, i turned it off and got out and saw a huge puddle underneath the car. i always check the old filter and inspect the mating surface from here on out

its even funnier when you change your oil and check to make sure the old ring came off with the old filter, but dont check the new filter to see if the ring is even there(this was before i knew anything about cars other than how to change my oil) yea, needless to say i was in the oil ocean after start up...it made a huge messs

Sounds like a few of your are a little sloppy when doing oil changes.

I would never think of leaving all that oil mess running down the side of block after unscrewing the old filter.

So wiping up is just a no brainer.... and if you wipe up (including the filter mating surface) you would NEVER be able to miss the old gasket stuck on there.

Hell, I even go so far as to spray some 2+2 around the area so the thin film of oil left after a good wiping is COMPLETELY gone so it doesn't attract dust and build up that ugly road gunk.
