Default interesting offer i got

i have a friend that i do work for and they have a complete 351 motor. ran the numbers and its production is '77.

i can obtain this motor for about 150 bucks.

so if i swap out the necessary parts to swap my motor for the 351...what would be faster?

the 351 would just be a direct swap for now except i would do some port match and massaging of the heads and intake. but stock parts. carbed of course

my motor:
EFI, 76mm c&l meter, 70mm t/b egr
66 289' heads 52cc chamber. (ported, polished, bowls worked, larger valves 1.94 1.5)
typhoon intake(ported and matched to heads)
comp cam x270hr-14 (.512/.512 lift 276/280 duration)

would i be taking a step backwards doing that kind of a swap until wayyyyyy further down the road when i can afford to HCI the 351 motor. or would i see an even further improvement?

i dont have any dyno sheets of my new build or track times but i can tell you it feels a shyte ton faster than my old build (stock heads, b cam, typhoon intake).

the car would probably be slower. right now if you swapped everything over you would be getting more cubes but the heavier rotating assembly of the 351 so the car wouldnt accelerate as fast and then you have the added weight of the motor itself. then it goes back to the saying 302 parts make 302 power

the only pro i see is you would have a stronger block

A- its a smogger windsor

B-you don't drive your car anyway

So if your asking if it will be faster sitting in the garage the answer will be no

I would let it go until I could find a 69-74 block. Right now your car doesn't even have long tubes anyway.

what does long tubes have anything to do with it? IIRC the headers have to be designed for a 351

I don't think that motor will not be making the kind of power your 302 is currently making. I'd say your 302 is probably making 240-250rwhp. Even with minor port work on the heads and intake, I'd say the 351 will not be making that much power. I'd just buy it and when you have the money do the h/c/i swap to it.

aren't 302 and 351 motors the IDENTICAL physical size and weight? The only difference is bore/stroke that gives the difference in displacement? They're both small blocks based on the same form factor. We're not talking a Small block vs a big block which will weight more with no initial advantage in HP/TQ numbers.

No the block heights are different, the 351 is physically taller and weighs a little more plus has heavier internals

no, the deck height on the 351's are taller, bore size and stroke are bigger. its still a short block yes and the widths are close to the same. 351 overall mass is about 100lbs more than the 302 iirc.
