Im sure this is really old to some but news to me..so my apologies up front.
I might be getting a pristine 1988 LX with automatic and was wondering what would be the first few cost effective changes you would make to improve performance just alittle bit...10 hp?

haha im in the same boat as you brotha. i do know a few guys that build stangs but my knowledge base isnt what id like it to be especially with v8's or rwd.
i know that my 88 gt is running shorty headers, off road h pipe with single chamber flow masters and it sounds pretty damn good.
try going to the exhaust sound clip section and listening to the clips so you can get an idea of what you want.

I'm sure thats what he wants alot more H/P (don't we all) but like everything it takes money.Enjoy the car for what it is scoote and do little add ons when you can afford to.. Do exhaust bbk shorty headers x pipe with high flow cats. Ebay has alot of good deals or check craigs list for new and used parts.The first thing I mentioned on Thread about underdrive pulleys and K&N filter will only get you like around 2-4 hp. To really start getting H/P heads, cam, intake.... and MONEY! good luck, and enjoy hopefully your new 1988 lx
