My air bag is putting out a code 10, and I dont really want to try and find the ground and replace the entire thing, so I was thinking about just replacing the steering wheel with a custom one that DOES NOT have an air bag.

Question is, I can only find 2 places that have them online, and neither will work for my 1990 stang. Any helpful sites would be appreciated.


part 2 of my question is this: Will i need to have an adapter or some type of mounting kit for a new steering wheel? Thanks in advance I do appreciate it!

Well you are in California correct? What are you going to do when it comes time for the inspection?

Well, It isn't illegal to remove it is it? I've seen plenty of vehicles that came equipped with an airbag originally, and no longer have one and they don't get fined or pulled over because of it.. unless I'm missing something lol

Having an airbag, if the vehicle is originally equipped with one, is part of a state inspection. I know in Texas and in New Jersey you won't pass so I am PRETTY sure that in Cali you won't. Its not like its hard to swap back to the stock steering wheel when the time comes though.

What's the trigger for the air bag code?

I cut the front crash sensors out of the engine bay harness and removed them from the engine bay(adds some easy access for headlights), removed the blue box under the dash, removed the air bag light in the cluster, and then simply disconnected the air bag harness in the steering.

My wheel looks stock but the air bag is not functional.

As long as the blue box is gone you shouldn't get any lights for the air bag system I don't think. I know all my air bag stuff is sitting in a pile in my car and not going back on when I put it together so I def won't get any type of lights for it.

The blue box just causes a beeping noise when the cluster light is removed/burned out.

I'm not sure if this blue box also provides the turn signal chime or not, though.

meh, I still have to pass inspection BUT since it's code 10, meaning it shorted somewhere the airbag just won't deploy and it can't. SO, with that being said, i just need to remove the bulb in the cluster so the light stops blinking for the airbag and i should be good yes?

Just to be safe I would take the 4 screws out that hold the air bag to the steering wheel. Pull the bag out and disconnect the harness behind it. Put the bag back in and put the 4 screws back in. The screws are on the backside of the steering wheel.

That way there's no possible way for it to deploy as the harness is disconnected.
