It's very possible. There's a lot more to how fast you can go and how well you can handle than what type of transmission and how many cubic inches you have.
I'm quite positive a properly built 302 could beat a corvette. Perhaps even on a stock long block.

depends on what type of road race your talking about?? stop light to stop light?? or winding country roads?? if so, it'll be more about the suspension not tranny, and the vette would shine there, as for a stock AOD, build a 347 right and just put a stall in the AOD, then your living on borrowed time, you'd be wise to prep a built AOD......AND besides your crazy if you wanna run at 170 mph on the street...all for what bragging rights...yeah I have cracked many a zo-6's before but give them a mile or two race then they'd be out in front of me, you can't always win every aspect of a race, if so be the case build a turbo ride = 3.31 ish gears and lots of top end as well as bottom end you'll have when built right

i know before i did suspension, mine got shaky as hell around 100mph at the track.... ANd that was a controlled environment, hitting bumps and crap on a highway could be the difference between you ending up in a hole or not

Anybody who wants to go 170mph in a street car without a roll cage, safety harness, etc deserves to win a darwin award.
If you feel capable of going 170mph for ****s and giggles please go do it at the risk of only your life.
