Looking for speed, Need advice

I've been running around in circles for the past 4 or so months trying to find something that'll suit me. After a long and lengthy process I've come to the conclusion that the perfect platform for me is a Mustang.

However, I don't really know where to start. I know to stay with an 89+ for the mass air vs speed density. Also been told to stay away from 96-99 Stangs because that 4.6L was kind of a dog. This is at least what I've been told.

OK. So that leaves me with 89-95 5.0's. I'd really like to stay with the 5.0.

My first question...is there any reason to avoid the 94-95 cars? I've found they're actually cheaper than the Fox bodies. Just want to make sure there's no reason to stay away. Plans are just a fun weekend car, working a little on everything.

Thanks guys.

BTW. I have about 8K to spend..total, this year. So I'd like to spend about 4-5K on the car, and 3K restoring anything that's broken and doing a few mods..saving anything major for next year.

depends what style you like

it is pretty cheap and easy to switch from speed density to mass air, I would look at 87-95 as they are all are fuel injected 5.0's. 87-93 are lighter than 94-95 but as you said 94-95 are cheaper they put out the same power. I would say go with the body style you like better, 94-95's are a bargan right now. 96-98 i think are the weak years 10 less hp and more weight than a fox 99 i am pretty sure is the first year of the better 4.6. It really depends on who you ask they are all fun cars with a lot of potential. The 5.0 does have better and cheaper aftermarket options. with the money you have you will be able to put together a nice fun mustang. mike

Thank you for the reply and I'll extend my search into the other years. I personally like the Fox bodies a little more, but the SN95s have way more of a sports car look to them...at least imo.

Reason I'm asking about the 94-95..I found a 1994 Cobra for sale about a half hour away. They're asking 4.2K for it but it's all original..no mods, gotta love unmolested cars. It needs a little touch up and some A/C work but it sounds like a good deal. Going to look at it tomorrow.

I've been calling around for a little while and it's usually all rust and no play....

get the cobra, it'll have all gt-40 stuff and roller rockers ect ect

96-98 cobras wernt dogs :) i had one, they can be had for a relatively cheap price, BUT will obviously be more then then other platforms since it is a "cobra"

and you can find fox bodies with A LOT of go fast goodies already installed running great for your $8,000 budget,

But as stated before, go with the body style you like, that way you dont dump money into a car you dont care for

Just take your time and shop around, and wait for that one mustang to find you. Theres tons of deals out there, just last night i was brousing craigslist around my area and found a 90 notch with a built 351 efi, with afr's, tfs intake, 5 lug swap, suspension, all the fancy doodads for only 7,500 bucks. I thought it was a great deal, i would be all over it if i had the cash. Just remember the best price is whatever youre comfortable paying.

Had a 69 fastback and two 95's. Kinda partial to the SN 95. Buy the 94 Cobra do not look back. Bubba

:*(

That car is gonna need a LOT of TLC. Like a whole lot. It had hail damage..Every body panel was messed up. Both tail lights were holy. There was rust around the rim of the windshield, interior was pretty trashed too. List of problems goes on. It drove OK, but it was missing a little didn't have a steady idle, had a history of overheating..etc...ec... Overall, think I'll pass.

OK, ladies and gentlemen...What's the real difference between the 96-98 4.6 and the 99+ cars? I want to open up my search as much as possible.

Disappointed that car didn't work out. But there's always something else waiting.

$4200 for that much damage is a ripoff...

I still suggest you find another $2k somewhere and come pick up my cobra
