Default opinions on flycutting pistons in the block

im concerned...in theory if all slugs didnt have exact material removed off the tops of the pistons perfectly wont it throw off engine balance??? im thinking theory here, and have seen peoples actual dremel work that didnt look so hot while others take theirs to a machine shop, while others pull the pistons out and get them cut. what do you guys recommend and why

its always best to do it right

but why flycut stock pistons, then pay to balance them. Buy new forged pistons and get those balanced.

fwiw, TRW pistons may be forged, but they are the lower end...

You are not likely to change the weight enough to effect the balance.......the problem is the aluminum shavings you are likely to leave in your engine.

It's best to pull them.

if machining prices are as bad everywhere else as they are here, it'll be cheaper to just buy new pistons. if you want to use the old ones, pull 'em out. the one metal shaving that doesn't get cleaned out of the bores will haunt you later.

No. I doubt you'd take a gram off.

It's way too much work to strip the engine down to the short block in the car to do a half assed job of flycutting in the car.

For the labour involved, just yank the engine and do it properly.
