need gear advice?
ok guys need some help figureing out what gears to get
i plan on putting a 2.5 stall convertor and a manual hold valve body with shift kit in the aod
i want a good gear that will give me a good 1/4 mile time
was thinking 410's but to much gear for the 1/4 would be fun in the 8th mile
but talked to one guy and he sugested 355s
he told me what i want to try to do is stay out of over drive in the 1/4 mile
what you guys think and suggest.........

First up, what are you doing with the trans? Manual valve bodies are different than shift kits.
With my old setup, I ran a B&M 3k stall and the B&M shift kit (with the pressure maxed out) in the AOD. I ran 4.10s and 26" slicks. Result? TIRE FIRE! With stock suspension and a mild tune to the computer I ran a 2.12 60ft. 1/4 mile was 14.5 @ 99mph.
Back to your question - 3.55 gears will be good for gas milage, and not much else. With the 4.10s I was still in 3rd (Drive) crossing the line. Depends on how much you want to drive the car off the track. If its mostly a street car, leave the stock converter in it and run 3.55s. Race car? 3500 stall and 4.10s.
Be honest with yourself, if you know you're actually going to race the car a lot and not drive it every day, go for big numbers and use steep gears (4.10s, 3.90s) If you're going to DD it, use the stock gears or something shorter like 3.55s or 3.27s.

Anyone who recommends a 3.55 in an AOD car and thinks you'll have a good 60 and et, along with "you'll be in OD at the end of the track" obviously hasn't got a clue nor experience in that area, and if you have "tire fire" on an AOD car with 4.10's at the track, for crap sake take the dang street tires off and run a slick = prob solved............if you have any hope for a good 60 ft, comparable to that of a stick car , you need a 4.10 and stall as the aod has a 2.40 first ratio, you can control your end of the track and top speed by a tire change if you think it's to much, tire change is alot easier than a gear swap so 4.10's + stall = 26 inch tire to start, you can always go to a 28 inch tire latter

i get it .........but the valve body has a shift kit built into it ......i have about 297 to 305 hp at the wheels ..........wouldnt it be smart to avoid overdrive at all costs......i need the 2,500 stall becouse of the cam it runs 2000-5500 ish ......will i run out of my drive gear if i run 410 thats the thing i am affraid of ....if i hit od it will fall on its face wouldnt it .67 od ratio ......the reason i want to get the valve body for the aod is so i dont have to do the shuffle this one makes drive the second gear and wont go to drive till you put it in o/d .....if i leave it in od it drives and shifts normal but with this when i shift to d its really 2nd gear......i am just trying to avoid getting the wrong set up i probably should have explaind the things i am doing better........and its not really ment to be a track car but want no problems on the street

i didnt even read any of the responses....
first off, buy your buddy a new helmet so he doesnt hurt his head getting on the short bus.
aod cars WILL NOT SHIFT INTO OD under WOT, so thats a non issue.
4.10's ARE NOT TOO MUCH IN THE 1/4 mile.... nuff said
3.55's in an AOD? leave it off and push it... you'll run close to the same cuz after 16 seconds who really cares ?
2500 stall ??? 3000 is the BARE MINIMUM unless you wipe your a$$ with 100 dollar bills and would like to do it again in the near future. 3500 is good for a dd street car
back to gears, a lot of aod cars have 3.27 in them stock... it was the upgrade. and it sux..... you always want to make a minimum of 2 gearsets swap to even feel it. 4-5 gearsets will make a 1 second diff
the myth ??? you need to shift higher than 1:1 in the 1/4 with 4.10's
the reality ??? nope... you'll trap about 5200 in a stock car
the myth? you'll tach 3k doing 60
the reality??? you'll tach 3k doing about 75-80
the reality??? an all stock t5 car will pull the tires on a 5k launch on 4.10's
the reality??? all other gears sukkk unless you have twin turbo or 15+ pounds of boost that comes on really quick
would 3.55 be better than stock ??? sure...... but ask an ethiopian if he'd like to continue starving ? or eat a rotten whopper out of the garbage.
just cuz he wants garbage doesnt mean it aint no surf and turf with a few oberon's
thats all im sayin

if your lighter... it flashes lower
if your not at 325 or so... it flashes lower
so typically a 2500 converter will flash at 2200 on a 300 hp stang, and thats way too low
and for the other q's..... already answered.... but NO , 4.10 is PERFECT, and in an aod will get in OD more often while cruising and can actually make MPG better than stock
judge performance gain on your current gearing. if u do 2 sets... you'll hardly feel it, 4 sets... you'll feel it
door tag "ax" m=2.73, z= 3.08, e= 3.27
