Default Need Diagnostic Help...

I have an '83 fox with a new 331 Stroker installed recently.
the engine consists of a DSS level 10 block, TFS FAC 190 heads, and a TFS stage 2 cam. topped of with a holley 600 vac sec.
the car will run and drive alright, no mashing the throttle or anything.
but if i want to get on it, it will hesitate a second then squat and take off. no wheel spin regardless of gear. and when i take it to the track i run out of fuel or spark about the same time i hit 4th gear. i run 8.49@83.2 and 13.49@96.15.
the hesitation sounds to me like an accelerator pump problem, but i cant figure out why its not making any real power, or why it cant make a full 1/4 mile pass.

can anyone shed any light on my problems. i know i probably forgot alot of details, but im so confused and tired of working on this car. i'll try to answer any questions i can.

thanks for the help guys.

definitly an accelerator pump issue, probably running way too lean on initial throttle.

also, for that combo, your carb is way too small

so am i running out of air then. it feels like i am running out of fuel.
i hit 4th (or very late in 3rd) and then it bogs, and the pedal does nothing.

Probably an accelerator pump problem, though it COULD be an emulsion circuit issue or an air bleed issue that's causing a delay or problem when the main circuit comes on....if that's the case then it will have problems almost every time you shift and especially when cruising and then accelerating at light part throttle, particularly in higher gears(like light accel in 4th while in traffic for instance).

As far as falling flat on the top end, it could be a fuel problem, but most likely a carb problem. What pump and pressure are you running, what's the fuel system setup? It could just be getting strangled out on the top end cuz the carb is too small, or it could be that the needle and seat in that puny 600cfm is smaller than what you need at they aren't moving enough fuel on the top end and the bowls are emptying out.

In any case, before you worry about tuning anything, I'd replace that 600 vac with at LEAST a mechanical 650, but you really need a mechanical 750. If you want a carb you can tune ideally to your engine, the something like a Quick Fuel/Proform, or if you don't mind spending more, a Pro Systems. Otherwise at least get a 750cfm mechanical Holley HP series.

i was thinking it was something like that.
i just bought a holley red fuel pump (too cheap to get the blue, even though i should have), 3/8" fuel line all the way up to the carb, regulated at 6 psi, with a mesh filter before the carb. also have an inline filter right before the pump.
i was thinking it might be a spark issue as well.
so i've been looking into getting a CD ignition box.
any opinions, i heard the mallory's were just as good as the MSD's but less expensive.
what are peoples opinions on Edelbrock 750 mechanicals.

Edelbrocks are reliable and easy to work on, but won't make the same power as a Holley based carb, and in most cases can never be tuned right and have throttle response issues.

Just accept the fact that you're going to spend over $500 on a good carburetor and be done with it.
