According to the book this is a failure of a o2 sensor on the left side. I was wondering if most people just go ahead and replace both sensors?

no reason not to, some would disagree but if you're going to rent the tool (unless you have one) then you might as well knock it all out at once

Just wondering, I was under the impression that the only tool needed would be a "slotted" deep well socket. Am I missing something here?

O2 socket comes in several configurations. All have 7/8" in common. If one tire was bald would you replace the one near it that was not bald? Your wallet.

you can just rent the tool kit at oreilly's or advance, and yeah bubba, when you've run one tire bald the other three couldn't possibly need replacing, its a bad comparison to be fair.

Gee, after only 14 years of Ford,Mercury, Lincoln dealership service I got used to only fixing what was broken. If parts were checked and found to be non defective the parts and labor were charged back to dealership. It is called the bb gun approach not necessary to use a 10 gauge shotgun. But, it is your wallet.
