well I was thinking along the same lines.
the cylinder bores look like they have fresh cross hatch/hone marks..... REAL fresh. but the stock timing chain was on there, and it had a TON of slack, worse then my motor when I replaced it, and I had 150,000 miles at the time.

Maybe he had the head off and put everything back together when he found a seller. I can't see an engine running very long without a head gasket. Hone marks really can't tell you how long ago an engine was rebuilt. Doesn't matter how fresh they look.

yea I was just gonna slap my stuff on it, and throw it in the car, spray it with a 200 shot, and wait for it to blow.
but I figure if I invest the $500 or so to have it checked, and have new bearings and rings installed, it will go twice as far for me.

if you look closely, you can see how my current motor has almost no hone/cross hatch marks. then look at the one I just got, its a huge difference.
My current motor, 160,000 miles
"new" motor
(nice hone marks, but look at the water ports )
here is from below
Old/current motor
(notice the score marks picture was taken February when I did the head/cam swap)
new motor
you can also see my current motor, looks to have more oil "soaked" into the cylinders/block/rods. dunno if that show's age or not.
but it looks to me this new motor is in much much better shape then my current wore out motor.

there's no telling.
I'm still considering calling the guy, and being like "WTF?!" he seemed like a pretty cool guy, said he has a 408 turbo fox, supposedly.
