k. i know MGW is be all end all shifter. i'm not asking wich shifter i should get though. i was asking if anybody knew what shifter was in it and would it be better then the one i have to install. i found out it was a first generation Hurst Comp plus shifter, before they started using billit on the shifters.

well i just got done swapping my shifter out and i am glad i did. i know Hurst makes good stuff but this shifter was worn. no spring pressure what so ever. the shifter just flops around when its out of the car. put the UPR in and it almost automaticly finds 3rd. throws seem just a hair shorter then with the old Hurst. I like the UPR Alot. only time will tell if it will last, have heard neither good or bad about the shifter so we will see.

Back when I was looking for a new shifter, I strongly considered the UPR. I think I remember seeing that it is pretty good for the money, but time will tell as you said. Hope it works out well for ya!

It might be hard to find someone wanting to buy a worn out shifter.

Since the issue presented in the thread has been taken care of, I have a question.

I have the same Hurst shifter the OP has. It's kind of hard to get it to go into reverse. This didn't start until after I had the tranny out and pulled the shifter to refill it. Is this some sort of adjustment that needs to be made?

there is no adjustments on the shifter other then positive stops. Are you sure that the plastic cup that the shifter ball sits in wasn't worn or broken when you put the shifter back in? Also. Check to see if the positive stop isn't hitting when trying to get in reverse. I also think that the t-5s reverse gear is a non-syncronized gear so if it doesn't want to go into reverse put it back into first gear then try reverse. Should fall right into gear.

I'm about to take the Hurst apart and clean it and measure the springs so maybe I can go to the hardware store and get new ones to replace the worn ones and have a fresh rebuilt shifter.
