Default Less restrictive intake on '90 5.0 - Kit or DIY?

Hi all. I'm fairly certain that I'm picking up a '90 5.0 this Saturday coming up. It's stock with the exception of a set of Flowmaster mufflers. I'm planning to remove the intake silencer but was also thinking about just buying one of those cold air intake kits. Something like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BBK-1557/
But I was also wondering about just adding a K&N cone-style filter to the end of the existing intake tube. Anyone know what the part # for a K&N cone-style filter that would fit would be or have a link to a DIY procedure for this? What would be the better way to go? Would it be worth the extra $ to buy the kit? Or would I get about the same results from a DIY method? Thanks in advance for input.

+1. The factory air intake system is already a cold air type because it takes air from the passenger side front fenderwell. Just take the airbox off and remove the silencer from the fenderwell and put a drop k&n panel it it.

The CIA that you see on the aftermarket might help a little because the tubes allow smoother airflow BUT the chrome ones do build up heat. They do look good though..

Also if your going aftermarket might as well buy bigger maf housing. No need for less restrictive piping and a small hole upfront. Just get the filter alone then latet get the maf housing.

K&n filter is good but the AMSOIL filter filters better with the same airflow capabilities...a cai is a waste of money if you don't get a tune for it

not to throw myself under the bus, but modular cars do run like **** without getting tuned for a CAI (he has a 00 GT), the S197's are even worse...

but on a 302...? hell no, it does just fine, even the picky SN95's
