Default For those that enjoy long tales, and enjoy sharing wisdom, c'mon in

Alright so i went to my dads work today and we put together his 383. Pretty much had the rolling kit in before, today we did heads, intake, rr's, pushrods ect.. ( He's a chevy guy )

So i was thinking ah man, i want to do this with the 5.0 real bad. So right now im sitting with a fairly stock motor. I have a free 88 crown vic 5.0L coming to me soon i shall tear town. And prep to be the replacement motor.

Right now im a broke university student, and my current motor is burning oil like a champ. So im going to need to replace it soon. And if i do it i want to do it right. Im starting to build a good parts pile, but i want to start deciding how big ill be going with my rebuild in the future.

So i was on the fence about a 306 or a 347. Where i stand i will be running my tubular gt40 and long tubes when this is all said and done.

306

I can do this cheap, gt40 heads (~$500) - available
I have a source to buy a X3Z cobra computer, so ill be good for the 24# ($150) - available.

347
big heads,
plan on running quater horse ( change the engine displacement, and mess around with the tuner)
plan on running lightening maff & tb
42# ?

Probably when its all said and done, the 347 will be a good $2500 more then the 306 route. But easily a difference from 340hp to 420hp ( guess )

Im just trying to plan it out, because right now i have easy access to gt40 heads, x3z comp, and 24# for a total of ~$1000. But theres no way my bottom end will handle it. And after all the effort, and extra little costs i might as well do the whole thing over. But why build a 306, when i can build a 347. As mjr has taught me - never put 302 parts on a 347.

My dad ( i was surprised ) said i should go for the 347. But wait a few years before i start the project. Which is boring as hell. Im 20 and i want to get this bad boy started. Its hard to have a 5.0 and keep it stock! Especially when all these parts keep poping up that will flow perfectly.

Whats everyone's thoughts? What would you do? And lets keep in mind my current 302 is on its last leg.

Am i not giving the 306 enough credit? Am i over/under estimating the cost of the 347?

Im just leaving this as a open topic discussion to see where it goes.

IMHO, Those GT-40 heads are not going to be enough on a 347 engine.
You need to go aftermarket for some real heads.........

Oh hell no. I didn't plan on running the gt40s on the 347. The gt40s are for if I decide to go with the 306 route. I just don't want to end up with a bunch of mild 302 parts when I would have been better off to just buy everything and prepare for a 347 down the road.

I'd got afr or brodix or something fancy for a 347.

Right now its just do I buy 302 parts and stay small, or save up and go really big.

why not just buy a 351 instead of 347 you get a stronger bottom block for power and it would cost you less money depending on what parts you put into it

its not the cobra computer you would need to run 24# injectors..... its the Maff. The maff on the vehicle senses the air being pulled in and send a message to the injectors on how much fuel it needs and what not. dont get the computer, just get a maff that has been calibrated to the injectors you are going to be running

and just a thought, you could take the engine apart, have it decked bored and all the good stuff, have your crank polished and checked out, along with the rods, then replace all bearings, and put different pistons on the car. Afterwards, you throw on the parts you plan to use on the 347.... might be a tad on the over kill for the 306 giving you a power band that is higher then it would be on the 347 but you could save money, start getting parts for the 347 you want without wasting money on parts you would have to rebuy

I think I priced a basic 351 swap at around a grand awhile back. I don't remember what all I included in that but that would be a stock 351 with stock heads
