Looking for opinions on gears
#12
I have 410's and they work great. I have a T5 tranny so first gear seems very short but once I get out of 1st it really pulls hard. Sometimes I wish I had went with something more than 410's also. I've got a lot of plans in the future to increase HP considerably so I'll wait and see how it feels once I reach my HP goals.
I have no loss in fuel mileage. If anything I'd say its better because I reach cruise speeds faster so I spend less time accellerating.

Just so you know, that T-Bird rearend is wider than the Mustang rear so the wheels will stick out a bit more.
I ran 3.55's from 1990 until a couple of months ago. @ 62mph I gained 300rpm over the 2.73's. I just overhauled the rearend after 167K miles and went 3.73's. I really can't tell the difference from the 3.55's. My top speed with the stock motor and 3.55's was 145mph. Not sure what it will do now. I too run 26" tall tires and with the 3.73's, and if I recall correctly, I am turning 2000@60mph.
It's rained about 35" in the last month so I haven't had it out for awhile.
If you don't race the car and it is all stock, I would actually recommend a 3.27 gear. It will give you a boost in acceleration but keep the rpms down on the highway and probably about the same mpg on the highway and a little better around town. I averaged about 20mpg on the hwy with my 3.55's on a stock motor with a o/r H-pipe and Flowmasters which don't flow much better than stock.

If the wheel/tire combo will NOT work, can I replace just the Turbo Coupe axle shafts with the mustang ones in order to return to OEM width?
Thanks to everyone for all the input, it is definately helpful.

No, the extra width is one of the drawbacks to having disc brakes. There is really nothing you can do, unless you cut the axle tubes, and shorten the whole unit.

Well, I can tell you now, that ain't happening. So I guess 17x8's is the way to go. Maybe 255's? I just heard people talk about "fox length axles" and assumed that is what they meant. I think the rear disc setup is worth the slightly narrower rear tires. I guess if I ever get carried away I could always mini-tub (doubt it, but could). I am really leaning towards just cleaning the new rear-end up, slapping it in there and seeing what happens. If it sucks, I can always change it, more work but what the hell, that's why I got a project car, huh?
