Default Transmission gear with rear end gears

I'm trying to do research on an upcoming project of mine. I'm wanting to rebuild my t5 transmission and rear end & need some help with gear choices. I have a 1987 Gt Convertible & I'm wanting something kinda decent on gas but yet can have a little fun with. I'm not wanting to race it just enjoy it :-D. If anyone can give me some input on what tranny gears I should use with what rear end gear it'd be awesome! Hope everyone has a happy thanksgiving! ~Q

Assuming your T5 is out of a fox, the easiest and cheapest upgrade would be to find a 5.0l SN95 and grab the trans. then simply swap the fox input shaft into it. Anything beyond that, you should just get a TKO or 3550. As for rear end gears, Stick to a set of 3.27s or 3.55's. Plenty of enjoyability, and will still keep you in a decent RPM range for gas savings.

Astro performance makes a T5 with a different 1st and 5th gear ratio. That can make for a steeper rear gear. Just depends on what suits your driving style.

3.73's work well for the street and still net me close to 20 mpg in my 89 vert

I have 3.73's in my 93 and can get up to 25mpg on the highway but with the 3.3* first gear it is a little much for my liking on a DD. Stick with 3.27's, 3.31's or 3.55's

U have to also factor in the wheel and tire setup into the decision!

I got 23 MPG when I drove from Pittsburgh to Daytona, Florida. I'm running a stock ratio T-5, 3.73's and 17 inch tires with 40mm sidewalls. 2200 RPM at 70 mph.
