Clutch and flywheel match question
Evening everyone,
So I am getting the last of the parts to get my car to run in spring. I was looking at getting the spec stage 2 clutch kit from Americanmuscle.com. Something I never noticed while reading about the kit was that they want you to get a spec aluminum flywheel. I was curious to why it had to be a spec flywheel and I called, pretty much did not answer my question I guess to why it is so important to run a spec flywheel. So, the question is what is the difference? I already bought a new OEM flywheel a couple months back. I did see some other clutch kits suggest just a new flywheel, but not the brand just a new flywheel. So is spec just trying to make more money, or does it actually hold the forces better? Thanks guy.

The new clutch recommendations most have is so you have a smooth mating surface for the new clutch. An alternative is having your flywheel machined, which is what I did when I replaced my stock clutch.
There is no need for aluminum. Check and see if anyone else is running the clutch you want on a stock or steel flywheel.

I did get a new OEM flywheel. I called Summit, and the gentlemen actually helped out quite a bit. He said the main reason to upgrade the flywheel would be so that you do not have flywheel failure. He said the iron does not do as well as the steel with heat. But, he said for my application and for the power, I am not doing anything crazy. I did the trick flow top end kit, and will not be going down to the track so I think a stock one should work fine.
